Unbalance = weight

Postby amerigoV » Wed Feb 07, 2007 10:25 pm

One of the tenets of Karate is unbalance = weight. If you do not have good control over your movements, then it is the same as hanging a weight on your arm or leg.

I view the corollary of this statement as my current situation -- weight = unbalance. My extra weight results in poor footwork and reaction -- I spend too much energy trying to get my body to move where my mind wants it to go. I have felt incredibly sluggish both in karate and when I play some BBall with Alex.

Due to work, I have not been able to get to the Wed. class since I started the diet. Tonight was the first opportunity to attend Wednesday class, which has sparring and is more intense physically overall. Tonight, I could really tell I had dropped some weight. I had much better footwork and overall conditioning was much better (I have been working out more as well). Certainly helps with my overall motivation.

Feel the wrath, baby! :conan:

Good job. It always helps when you can see actual results.

Minor Karate update:

They introduced us to fighting with weapons. In this case they are short stick (about 3' long) - I think the style is call Scrimma (or something like that). Pretty neat what you can do with a bit of training. The cool thing is the patterns were designed to fight with a machette (although they discontinued used of said weapons in class a few years back for obvious reasons).

I find it interesting that they tend to teach with two sticks instead of focusing on just one to start. So, I am training to pick up the two-weapon fighting feat -- you people better watch out!

I advanced another "belt" (there are two steps to green, and three to brown -- I just got the second green). I did the main testing before I was off to Vegas for work training. I managed to just get to class on Wednesday to do the kumite (fighting) to finish my testing after my flight back.

Boy, do they push you as you go up. Four straight fights. First one was OK, second one really sucked (a black belt that I think enjoys the sparring a bit too much), another ok fight, then another blackbelt. Barely standing but not injured, I am glad to say.

I got a standing punching bag (the house I rent has no basement, thus no rafters to hang a conventional one from). I want to work on my kicks and just throwing techniques. I hope that will help with the sparring in the future.

Thanks!

Are you guys bracing for the big storm? Christine waved me off (so I am on my own up in Mich this weekend, which appears that will get off light).

Yep, the "White Death" arrived here about 1130 this morning. Lot's of wrecks, lot's of 'gloom and doom' from the talking weather heads. As long as the plows get a good start I think we will be ok.

The storm is supposed to push up this way -- looks like tonight and tomorrow. I put my snow guy on notice!

From the sounds of what is coming down now, it seems like it is changing from snow to the "wintry mix" now.
